San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch isn't ready to discuss the details of Brandon Aiyuk's potential return, even after the receiver filed for reinstatement earlier this week.
Appearing on KNBR, Lynch described Aiyuk's situation as "fluid" and suggested the organization would have more to say about the process next week. His reluctance to get into specifics comes after head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated Wednesday that he has mentally moved on from the possibility of Aiyuk returning to the lineup.
"We've got a 6-1 football team that we think really got a shot at this thing this year. So our focus is going to remain on this team," Lynch said, via ESPN's Nick Wagoner. "We're working with the NFL Management Council to navigate through a different
situation. And so it's fluid. I'm going to kind of leave it at that because I've been recommended to do so and I think it's the right thing to do for a pathway for both sides here that works."
When asked whether or not "all options" were on the table for Aiyuk, including returning to the 49ers, Lynch noted that "everything's possible" and cited the team's relationship with Aiyuk's new agent, Drew Rosenhaus.
"He's reasonable, he's got integrity. So in terms of that, that's all good," Lynch said. "We'll see how this thing goes. I think I'll just leave it at that. And like I said, I think we'll have a lot more I can share with you in the coming weeks."
Aiyuk filed the necessary paperwork for reinstatement after spending the season on the reserve/left squad list. Rosenhaus said the receiver is healthy and ready to play, and ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Aiyuk plans to report to the team's facility Friday.
However, the 49ers have given little indication that they intend to bring him back into the fold. Lynch and Shanahan previously indicated that Aiyuk was no longer part of their plans after a lengthy dispute involving his contract, rehabilitation and relationship with the organization.
San Francisco could ultimately release or trade Aiyuk rather than reintegrate him into the roster.
