The San Francisco 49ers' series of roster moves leading up to Week 1 went according to plan. They officially re-signed tight end Brayden Willis to their practice squad Sunday afternoon before taking the practice field in Melbourne.
San Francisco will practice Sunday, Monday and Tuesday before getting an off day Wednesday ahead of their regular season opener vs. the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday.
Willis was waived Saturday in a set of roster moves that saw long snapper Jon Weeks promoted to the active roster from the practice squad. By waiving Willis the 49ers indicated that TE George Kittle was still trending toward suiting up for Thursday's opener. It appeared the 49ers would still try to bring Willis back to the practice squad though since they
never replaced Weeks and left a practice squad spot open.
There was a small amount of risk involved with this since Willis isn't a vested veteran yet. By placing him on waivers the 49ers ran the risk of their former seventh-round pick being claimed by another team.
Willis cleared waivers Sunday and was officially re-signed to the 49ers' practice squad that afternoon according to an announcement from the team.
Now the 49ers have some internal insurance in the event one of their other TEs isn't available for Week 1. If that happens San Francisco can now turn to Willis who is officially back in the building.
