The final countdown to the 2026 Kentucky football season is on. Game one against Youngstown State is now just 9 days away, and as we count down the days, we're getting to know the players on this year's roster. Today, we're getting to know No.9, Matt Ponatoski.
Ponatoski is a 6'1", 205 lb quarterback out of Cincinnati, Ohio. As a member of this year's recruiting class, he was rated four stars, and ranked as the No. 219 overall player in the 247Sports composite rankings.
As such a highly thought of recruit, Ponatoski had several offers, including from teams like the Alabama Crimson Tide and Oregon Ducks. He is also a terrific baseball player who was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds. He opted to head to Kentucky rather than sign his MLB contract,
though, and will play for the Wildcats.
Heading into this season, Kenny Minchey is the clear starter, but the battle for the backup spot has been hard-fought, with Ponatoski in the mix. He has a good arm, and throws an accurate pass that helps out his receivers, and that has significant value. Hopefully, Minchey stays healthy for the Wildcats, but Ponatoski aims to be ready if needed.
