Kentucky football is set to kickoff the 2026 season and Will Stein era on Saturday against Youngstown State at 1 P.M. ET. We recently previewed the offense and defense for Youngstown State and what the Wildcats can expect this week.
Everyone is focused on the offensive side of the ball for both teams, but it will interesting to see how both defenses perform against these offense that both have dynamic elements. In this article, we will list X factors for each team on the defensive side of the football and who can make an impact on Saturday.
LB Grant Godfrey
Grant Godfrey returns to Kentucky and is poised for a big year in a new defensive scheme. Godfrey earned the trust of the coaching staff this offseason and was crowned the "green dot" by defensive coordinator
Jay Bateman. Godfrey will be responsible for relaying the play calls to his teammates and getting them lined up every snap. Godfrey will be thrown in the fire in week one, as Youngstown State brings their Walter Payton award-winning quarterback to Kroger Field.
Beau Brungard is a dangerous dual threat that can extend plays with his legs in the passing game and be a bell cow in the running game. Godfrey will have to play an excellent game to keep him in check when he tries to extend plays or gets his number called in the quarterback run game. Both will happen frequently, and Godfrey gets a perfect early test of a dual threat quarterback that excels at what he does. Kentucky has multiple dual threats on the schedule this season with South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers, Oklahoma's John Mateer, Texas A&M's Marcel Reed and LSU's Sam Leavitt; so this is the perfect test week one for this young defense.
S Ty Bryant
Ty Bryant returns as the leader of this defense and was voted second-team All-SEC last season by coaches. Bryant is a ball-hawking safety that is a sure tackler as well. Defensive coordinator Jay Bateman will run complex looks, rotating safeties at the snap to throw off opposing quarterbacks in hopes to create mistakes for the offense. Bryant will have to play fundamentally sound on the back end and contribute to slowing down the rushing threat of Beau Brungard in the quarterback run game.
ED Mi'Quise Humphrey Grace
Mi'Quise Humphrey-Grace is a player that can really benefit from the scheme change defensively, as he returns to a true edge defender alignment outside of the tackle. Youngstown State will consistently move the launch point for quarterback Beau Brungard in pass concepts to alleviate their lack of talent on the offensive line. They will also throw plenty of read option looks that edge defenders will have to rely on fundamentals to slow down. This can be a big day for Humphrey-Grace and the rest of the edge defenders if they can slow down this read option looks, but Humphrey-Grace in particular can out muscle the Penguin's tackles to get pressure on Brungard off the edge.
ED Michael Wells
This Youngstown State defense lacks true game breakers, but Wells is the closest thing that fits the bill for the Penguins. In 2025, Wells was an All-American that led the team in both sacks (10.5) and tackles for loss (15). Wells plays the hybrid outside linebacker role where he can drop into coverage or rush the passer. He plays with exceptional effort and instincts, but should be easily contained by Kentucky's offensive tackles Lance Heard and Malachi Wood.
