Kentucky football hosts the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday to open up conference play. This could be a high scoring game, and we went over X factors on offense for both teams that can make an impact in this game. However, this game could also come down to which defense makes game changing turnovers. Both teams come in with playmakers on the defensive side of the ball, so let's take a look at some X factors that can give the opposing offense fits this weekend.
CB Terhyon Nichols
Kentucky was down their starting outside corners last week with Terhyon Nichols and Hasaan Sykes, who were both ruled out despite dressing for the game... This could have been some gamesmanship from Will Stein and his staff, as they played young corners and play soft off coverage with those
guys. Defensive coordinator Jay Bateman typically plays an aggressive style of defense, so it makes you wonder if the soft coverage and sitting both corners was intentional for what they put on a film in week one for Alabama to watch. This staff has been very high on Nichols throughout the offseason, and he must live up to that hype as he will be responsible for covering Alabama's dynamic wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams.
LB Alex Afari
Coach Stein said in his Tuesday press conference that they will ramp up Alex Afari this week and expects him to increase his snap count on Saturday after playing just three snaps in the season opener. Afari has a ton of SEC experience and getting him game ready for this weekend could be huge for this defense. They had a healthy linebacker rotation against Youngstown State, but Afari has experience in this conference and has made a lot of plays for the Wildcats over the last four seasons. He is great against the run and will help with containing quarterback Keelon Russell when he tries to extend plays when they break down.
ED Sam Greene
Sam Greene had a good performance in week one coming off injury, he made plays and looked to be the player we saw last season. Greene doesn't have a ton of twitch and bend on the edge, but he plays with power and relentless effort on the edge. Alabama has a young offensive line that had some leaks in pass protection in week one against ECU. Greene will have opportunities to win one-on-ones and has to play with gap integrity when Russell leaves the pocket.
S Bray Hubbard
Safety Bray Hubbard is one of the best at his position in the country. Hubbard had a breakout season in 2025, as he made plays at all levels of the field. Hubbard is a sure tackler and can cover well, and his coverage ability will be put to the test with the talented tight ends Kentucky has. Hubbard will have to make plays on Saturday and limit the Wildcats athletic tight ends in the pass game.
ED Yhonzae Pierre
Alabama has a game wrecker on the edge with Yhonzae Pierre. On just 21 snaps in week one, Pierre had a dominant performance with a tackle for loss, a sack and a pick six in coverage. Pierre is the one guy that scares you on the Crimson Tide defensive line. Get your popcorn out when he get one-on-one pass rush reps against Kentucky left tackle Lance Heard.
