Kentucky football didn’t play last Saturday, and the Wildcats still moved up.
Will Stein’s ball club (7-1) climbed one spot toNo. 8 in Sunday’s AP Top 25
. The Wildcats spent the weekend resting and healing, and the poll rewarded them anyway. The rise has little to do with the bye. It comes from the way Kentucky won in October and from how many ranked teams have to line up against each other before any of this gets settled. Now comes the part that matters. Kentucky goes to Rocky Top on Saturday to face No. 16 Tennessee. Kickoff is 6:15 p.m. ET, under the lights, in Week 10.
A bye week gives a team time to think, and sometimes that’s the dangerous part. The Wildcats have to carry their edge through a week of rest and into one of the loudest buildings
in the sport. Nick Saban preached that the standard is the standard. It doesn’t change because you’ve been idle for seven days, and it doesn’t change because the game is on the road. Kentucky has to arrive in Knoxville in midseason form, not rested and rusty.
The poll gives Kentucky a comfortable cushion. The Wildcats hold 1,253 points, well clear of Tennessee’s 719 at No. 16. That gap is also a warning. Rivalry games like this tend to ignore the rankings, and a team on the wrong side of the points total has nothing to lose and a stadium full of fans pushing it forward. Kentucky is the one with something to protect.
The top of the poll
Miami is still No. 1 and still unbeaten at 8-0, with 62 first-place votes and 1,740 points. The Hurricanes face Notre Dame, No. 4 in this poll, in the 7:30 p.m. ET window Saturday. Notre Dame is 7-1 and ranked fourth, so Miami’s unbeaten season goes into a very tough spot.
Georgia moved up to No. 2 at 7-1, with seven first-place votes and 1,648 points. Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs remain the highest-ranked team in the SEC, and their next test is no gimme either. Georgia goes on the road to face No. 12 Ole Miss in the same 7:30 p.m. ET window.
Utah is 8-0 and sits at No. 3 with the other first-place vote. The Utes host No. 7 BYU at noon ET. UCLA is 8-0 at No. 5, and Indiana is No. 6. Kentucky sits right behind BYU in the poll, about 100 points back, so the winner of that Utah-BYU game will matter for the Wildcats’ placement too.
How the rest of the SEC fared
Ten SEC teams are ranked this week, and four of them play each other Saturday.
- No. 2 Georgia (7-1): up one. Plays at No. 12 Ole Miss, 7:30 p.m. ET.
- No. 8 Kentucky (7-1): up one. Plays at No. 16 Tennessee, 6:15 p.m. ET.
- No. 9 Alabama (6-2): up one. Plays at No. 15 LSU, 3:30 p.m. ET.
- No. 10 Texas(6-2): up one. Plays at No. 19 Missouri, noon ET.
- No. 12 Ole Miss (6-2): unchanged. Hosts: No. 2 Georgia.
- No. 15 LSU (6-2): unchanged. Hosts: No. 9 Alabama.
- No. 16 Tennessee (6-2): unchanged. Hosts: No. 8 Kentucky.
- No. 19 Missouri (6-2): up four. Hosts: No. 10 Texas.
- No. 23 South Carolina (5-3): up seven. Hosts Texas A&M, 3 p.m. ET.
- No. 25 Florida (5-3): up eight. Hosts Oklahoma, 7:45 p.m. ET.
Look at Saturday’s schedule again. Texas at Missouri, Alabama at LSU, Kentucky at Tennessee, and Georgia at Ole Miss are all ranked-versus-ranked games in the same conference on the same day. Every one of them can reshuffle this poll. The SEC will leave Week 10 with four losses among its top-20 teams, whether it likes it or not.
What it means for Kentucky
Stein has talked all season about the next game being the only game that matters, and this poll puts that into practice. Being ranked eighth means nothing in Knoxville. The Wildcats didn't coast in October, and they can’t count on a lead that comes from one rested weekend.
Winning on Rocky Top and Kentucky does more than keep its spot. It beats a ranked rival on the road at night and gives the committee, the voters, and the rest of the SEC a very clear answer. Lose, and the Wildcats drop back into the pack of one-loss and two-loss teams they just passed. Stein and Kentucky are no longer a team to sleep on; their proof is in the pudding, as we say in the South. It is no question that this team has already built a strong case for the CFP committee ahead of the first CFP poll release on Tuesday evening.
Kentucky is No. 8 and well rested. The Wildcats now get to show whether they’ve earned the number.
