The Kentucky football team sits at 6-1 after their week seven win over Oklahoma. They have wins over Texas A&M, LSU, and the Sooners, and are now ranked 12th in the US LBM Coaches Poll. They have worked their way into the playoff discussions, something nobody saw coming this quickly. However, ESPN's football power index isn't quite buying into the Wildcats yet.
After the week seven slate of games, the Wildcats moved up in the FPI four spots. However, that still leaves them outside the top 25, at No. 26 with a score 12.7, quite a bit lower than the polls.
Kentucky comes in 11th among SEC teams, and behind the 4-3 Aggies, 5-2 LSU Tigers, and 3-3 Sooners, all of whom the Cats have beaten. They're also behind Louisville, who is 4-3. It should be noted
that the UCLA Bruins, another surprise team this year at 6-0, is ranked even lower, at No. 31.
ESPN's FPI does give Kentucky some favorable projections. It gives the Wildcats a 40% chance of making the college football playoff. However, they are given just a 1% chance of winning the SEC, and a 2% chance of making it to the national championship game. Kentucky does have some tough games left to play, and the FPI gives the Wildcats are predicted to win 8.7 games.
If the record prediction comes true, the Wildcats would probably miss the playoff. Can they beat the odds? They have done it so far, so why not?
