Texas A&M spent its first two Saturdays outscoring people by a combined 78 points, and the bookmakers set their line accordingly, making the Aggies better than two-touchdown favorites and sending the Kentucky Wildcats into Kyle Field as something between an afterthought and a rumor. The Wildcats left with a 31-21 win anyway, and if you go looking for the fingerprints, most of them belong to a linebacker named Sam Greene, who the SEC named its Defensive Player of the Week on Monday—tidy paperwork for four quarters of thoroughly impolite behavior.
The honor arrives with the understatement common to such citations: an interception, six tackles, half a tackle for loss, and one fourth-down stop, as though a man's afternoon could be filed away in a box
score the way a butterfly gets pinned to velvet. It cannot. Not this one.
The Aggies were ranked ninth in the country, or eighth, depending on which poll you trusted, and Kyle Field filled up with 105,186 of the faithful—roughly the population of a small American city, all in maroon, fully expecting a laugh.
It did not go that way. On Texas A&M's first possession, the Aggies drove, business-like, to the Kentucky 11. Fourth down, one yard to go—the sort of play a crowd of six figures expects its team to convert in its sleep. Greene didn't let them sleep. He came off the edge like a man late for a train, dropped the runner for no gain, and turned the ball over on downs before the ushers had finished showing people to their seats.
That was merely the overture. Next Aggies possession, they worked it to the Kentucky 27, and Greene intercepted a pass and ran it back seven yards—not a great distance as returns go, but in the accounting of a football game, it's the difference between three points and none. In the third quarter, third-and-2, he came off the edge again and stuffed that too, forcing a punt that Kentucky turned into the touchdown drive that decided things.
By night's end, Greene had intervened at three of the most important junctures a defense can occupy—inside the 10, inside the 30, and third-and-short with the game hanging—and asked for nothing more than a line in Monday's transactions.
None of it was owed to him. Greene spent much of his offseason rehabilitating a knee serious enough to land him on the preseason Comeback Player of the Year watch list, the sort of honor a man collects when the football world isn't entirely sure he's walking normally again, let alone chasing down running backs in front of 100,000 strangers. He has answered that question with 10.0 tackles and an interception through three games—a 6-foot-2, 251-pound senior out of Washington, D.C., who made his way to Kentucky after two seasons at USC and has apparently decided that College Station was the place to introduce himself to the rest of the country.
There's history buried under this fixture, the way most good football history gets buried, under decades of dust. Kentucky and Texas A&M had met at Kyle Field exactly once before Saturday, in 2018, and the Aggies won that one too, 20-14 in overtime, sending a 13th-ranked Wildcats team home with nothing but the bus ride. Before that, the schools hadn't played since the first meeting between them, back in 1953, which also went to the Aggies, by a single point. It's a series so infrequent it's practically genealogical—held together mainly by the fact that Bear Bryant coached both programs, Kentucky before he got to College Station, and College Station before Alabama made him famous enough that neither one needed him back. Kentucky had never won in that town. Now it has, and Sam Greene's name is on the receipt.
The Wildcats (2-1, 1-1 SEC) won't get long to admire the view. They're home Saturday against South Alabama, a considerably smaller circus than the one Greene just walked into and, politely but firmly, shut down. Somebody in Lexington will no doubt remind him this week that South Alabama isn't ranked ninth, or eighth, or anything at all. Greene, one suspects, will treat the fourth down the same regardless. That's rather the point of him.
