Bad injury luck has followed Mark Pope and the Kentucky basketball team ever since he took the head coaching job in Lexington. This summer has been no different, and while speaking with the media on Monday, yet another was announce involving Jerone Morton.
It's a knee injury for Morton, who apparently hurt it during a recent practice. He is set to be out indefinitely, and will be re-evaluated in a few weeks. Unfortunately, it appears that this one will have him out for a while, including into the regular season.
Morton transferred to Kentucky this offseason from Washington State, but was born in the Bluegrass State. He is a very good three-point shooter, and had a terrific summer with Pope and the Cats. He was expected to be a big part of the rotation
this season in a young and inexperienced backcourt. The Wildcats didn't fill their 15th roster spot, and are already somewhat thin at guard. Morton's absence just makes things tougher.
Zoom Diallo and Alex Wilkins are the likely starters, and Morton is one of the few true guards off the bench. Mason Williams will likely see more minutes, and Kam Williams, recovering from an injury of his own, could spend some time at guard as well.
The injury is another tough blow for Pope and Kentucky. This is a big season, and they need all hands on deck. Another disappointing season could spell the end for Pope in Lexington. We wish Morton a speedy recovery.
