Most fans watching Kentucky football open its 2026 season againstYoungstown State on Sep. 5 will track the usual numbers: passing yards, third-down conversions, and explosive plays. The number that actually predicts how the Wildcats fare against Alabama seven days later won't show up in those columns. It's Average Starting Field Position (ASFP)—the least glamorous, most decisive stat in football.
Football is a territory game before it's anything else. Starting a drive at your own 20 instead of your own 35 barely registers in isolation. Multiply that gap across a 12-drive game, though, and a +15 ASFP edge is worth 180 yards — nearly two full fields — generated entirely by the interplay between Will Stein's offense and Jay Bateman's defense.
This
isn't the usual season-opening layup, either. Youngstown State comes in off an 8-5 season and an FCS playoff berth under seventh-year coach Doug Phillips, and the Penguins return quarterback Beau Brungard and All-American left tackle Desmeal Leigh, the backbone of an attack that gave FCS defenses matchup problems all last season. Kentucky beat this same program 31-0 back in 2022, but that YSU team was still building. This one enters Lexington expected to contend for the Missouri Valley title—which makes it a sharper field-position measuring stick than a typical Week 1 body-bag game.
Kentucky should still win comfortably. The way they win the field-position battle is what will tell us whether they're ready for Alabama.
Manufacturing the Short Field
Jay Bateman doesn't call a defense built to survive—he calls one built to dictate. Sitting back in a passive shell isn't a viable plan against SEC-caliber offensive lines, and it isn't Bateman's plan.
That front seven won't get a freebie, either. Youngstown State returns Leigh, an All-American, anchoring a veteran offensive line—which means push on early downs has to be earned, not assumed. Every tackle for loss Bateman's front generates against that group does double duty: it kills a Penguins drive now, and it rehearses the exact sequence Kentucky will need to force a punt from deep in Alabama territory next week. A three-and-out or a turnover doesn't just stop the opponent—it hands Stein's offense has a shorter field to work with.
The number to watch: if Kentucky's defense pins Youngstown State to an average starting position near their own 20, or forces enough short fields that Kentucky itself starts drives near midfield, the scheme is doing its job. A shorter field means Stein's playbook only has to produce two first downs to reach range.
The Art of Field Flipping
Stein's offense has a job that has nothing to do with scoring. Even on drives that stall, if the offense is consistently picking up two or three first downs — moving the ball from the 25 to the 45 before punting — that's the offense protecting its own defense, not just failing to finish.
Watch the drives Saturday that don't end in points. Is Kentucky flipping the field? Youngstown State's roster questions this year are mostly on defense, which makes it a fair test rather than a gimme: if Stein's unit can routinely push a defense still finding itself back near its own goal line, that's the same discipline that matters against Alabama. Force a Crimson Tide offense to sustain 10-play, 85-yard drives instead of 5-play, 40-yard ones, and the odds of a holding call, a drop, or a sack climb with every additional snap.
What to Watch For
Track where every drive starts Saturday, not just how it ends.
- Warning sign: Kentucky's ASFP sits inside their own 25 while a Youngstown State team with a returning All-American tackle and an FCS playoff pedigree is routinely starting near its own 35. Losing the hidden-yardage battle to a quality FCS opponent is a red flag Alabama's talent gap will expose.
- Good sign: Stein's offense avoids negative plays on early downs to pin the Penguins deep, and Bateman's front — against a real offensive line, not a pushover — still forces short fields that hand Kentucky the ball near midfield. That's the formula working as designed.
Alabama will likely still hold the talent edge. Field position is the lever Kentucky has to close that gap, and a Youngstown State team good enough to matter is exactly the opponent to prove it against. Week 1 is the only tape they'll get before it does.
