The Kentucky football season is just three days away, and Will Stein will make his debut as coach on Saturday. As we count down the days until their matchup against Youngstown State, we're getting to know the players on the roster. Today, we're taking a look at No. 3, Aaron Gates.
Gates is a 6'0", 199 lb defensive back out of Newnan, Georgia. A member of the 2023 recruiting class, he was rated four stars, and ranked as the No. 337 overall player in the 247Sports composite rankings.
Kentucky offered Gates out of high school, along with a number of top programs, but he committed to the Florida Gators. He would play there for three seasons.
As a freshman, Gates redshirted, but did play in four games, gaining valuable experience. Then, in 2024, he recorded
27 tackles, 3 passes defended, and 1 interception before suffering a serious injury. He returned last season, but played just four games before another injury ended his season. He transferred to Lexington this offseason.
Heading into 2026, Gates is looking to be healthy, and fulfill the promise he had exiting high school. He's clearly talented, and could be a difference maker if he stays on the field. He'll likely start as the nickel cornerback, with the ability to move outside if necessary. He was a big recruiting win for Stein, and has a high ceiling if his body holds up.
