Kentucky football's first win over Oklahoma in Norman came down to a safety who wouldn’t bite on a trick and wouldn’t be run down on the way to the end zone.
Jordan Castell is the SEC’s Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday, and the 21-13 final shows why. Take away his two interceptions, and this is a different night in a different stadium. Oklahoma entered averaging 23 points a game. Castell’s two plays helped hold the Sooners to 13.

Start in the second quarter, with Oklahoma at the Kentucky 10-yard line and a field goal lined up. The Sooners showed a kick, then ran a fake and tried to sneak a pass into the end zone. It’s the kind of call that works on a defense
that’s counting heads and watching the holder. Castell was watching the receiver. He stayed with the intended target and came down with the ball.
That was the setup. The finish came late.
Kentucky clung to a 14-13 lead in the fourth quarter, and Oklahoma was driving. Castell read a route over the middle and jumped it, taking the interception at the 41-yard line. He veered left, found daylight, and outran the pursuit for a 41-yard pick-six. It was the first touchdown of his college career, and it put the game away.
He also finished with nine tackles and a pass breakup. The 6-foot-2, 211-pound senior from Orlando had the kind of night the stat sheet can’t quite hold.

The moment has a backstory, and it’s the best part. When Kentucky came up empty on a fourth down in the red zone, Castell found Will Stein and promised him, “I got your back.”
Asked later what that meant, he kept it plain.
“It was just some trust,” Castell said. “I want him to trust us. We trust him, whatever he calls. If he wants to keep going for it on fourth down, we’re all behind him. ‘Don’t worry about it, the defense, we got you.’”
When the ball finally landed in his hands, there was no committee meeting. Did he think about slowing down? “Most definitely not… I caught the ball. I seen green grass. I’m going,” he said. “I’ll deal with the consequences when I get on the sideline.”
None came.
The performance fit a season-long pattern. Castell leads the SEC with four interceptions this fall, and his seven career picks are tied for 15th among active FBS players. He’s also a sure tackler, ranking sixth in the league at 8.14 per game, which isn’t the stat line you expect from a defensive back who spends his weekends in the passing lanes.
Alongside Ty Bryant, he gives Kentucky a safety pairing with a real case to be called one of the best in the country.
Castell says the connection is the point. “This team is the most connected team I’ve ever played with,” he said. And the Wildcats aren’t buying the hype. “Nobody thought we’d be here, so we not worried about what nobody’s saying. We gotta continue to just keep getting better, clean our mistakes, keep playing good football.”
The No. 12 Wildcats (6-1, 4-1 SEC) don’t get long to celebrate. Vanderbilt (3-4, 0-4 SEC) visits Kroger Field on Oct. 24, with a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff on SEC Network. Castell will walk out as the league’s best defender of the week.
Everyone is going to try to fool him now.
