Kentucky football started off the 2026 season with a 45-13 win over Youngstown State. The offense was the main focus, and they passed the test with flying colors in week one. We highlighted the offensive players that stood out with their performance in the season opener. Defensively, it is a bit harder to gauge based on being down both starting corners and rotating a lot of players at multiple positions, but here is who stood out in week one for Jay Bateman's defense.
Jordan Castell
Safety Jordan Castell transferred over from Florida, where he played over 1,000 career snaps. His experience combined with Ty Bryant make them one of the top safety duos in the conference. Castell had a great start in his debut with the Wildcats. Castell tied the team-high in tackles
with seven, and he also made two big time tackles for loss when he moved closer to the box.
Grant Godfrey
Grant Godfrey earned the right to be the "green dot" for Jay Bateman's defense in the offseason, as he is responsible for relaying the call to the defense and getting them lined up correctly every snap. Godfrey also tied the team-high with seven total tackles and was flying around to the football during his 42 snaps on Saturday. Godfrey helped the defense contain the Penguins dynamic quarterback Beau Brungard on the ground, holding him to just 29 yards on 12 carries. Godfrey had a solid performance week one that he will build on, his development is massive for this defense moving forward.
Isaiah McMillian
True freshman Isaiah McMillian played a team-high 62 snaps on Saturday, as the Wildcats were down their starting corners Terhyon Nichols and Hasaan Sykes. To be thrown into the fire like that, McMillian had himself a solid performance. He was also among the group tied for a team-high seven tackles and also logged a tackle for loss as well as a pass breakup. There are definitely areas for McMillian to grow, but to see action this early was a good sign and his performance may have earned him the CB3 job behind Nichols and Sykes--we will find that out this week against Alabama.
There were multiple guys who flashed, like defensive tackle Ahmad Breaux who got a sack off a nice pass rush win. Linebacker Bo Barnes also made plays on Saturday. This defense took steps in the right direction and got a lot of young guys good game reps to start their development. Kentucky faces a much larger challenge this weekend against Alabama, and after that we can really get a feel on the overall expectations to have for this side of the football.
