It came down to the final play of the game on Sunday Night Football for the Denver Broncos to finally secure a 30-26 comeback win over the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3.
Broncos quarterback Bo Nix led the offense on a final scoring drive, ending in a one-foot dive into the end zone by the third-year veteran with 47 seconds left. The only issue is the Broncos nearly left too much time for future Hall of Fame quarterback Matthew Stafford. Forty-seven seconds and one timeout. An eternity.
After a night full of back-and-forth battling, Stafford and the Rams' offense had been able to run roughshod over the Denver defense for much of the evening. The L.A. offense methodically moved down to the 19-yard line in seven plays. Nix could do nothing but watch
as the Rams drove deeper into Broncos territory.
It was time for one last stand by the Broncos.
As Stafford dropped back to pass on the final play of the game, Broncos Country held their collective breath, and watched the pass... float right into the hands of safety Talanoa Hufanga as he secured his second interception of the night.
Sideline cameras captured Nix's reaction as the play unfolded, from snap to pick. Cool, calm and collected as always, Nix waited and bounced with excitement, pumping his fist as he jogged onto the field to begin postgame handshakes.
Nix spoke about the feeling he encountered as he watched the Broncos' defense bend, but not break, in his postgame press conference.
"There’s nothing you can do on the sideline," Nix said on Sunday. "It’s always nervous, but we have the best defense to go out there and stop them. If our defense isn’t going to do it, nobody else will. It’s just a good team win, a good team finish, and that just kind of feels like our DNA.”
Nix has starred in this movie before, as the defense sealed several victories, many of them in come-from-behind affairs in 2025.
The Broncos' Sunday Night Football win over the Washington Commanders? Defense.
The Broncos' win over the then-defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles? Yep, the defense.
In London, when Denver beat the New York Jets? A sack on fourth down to end the game.
The Broncos continue to be a team living on a razor's edge. Whether it can be a sustainable formula remains to be seen. Imagine if both sides of the ball can play like that fourth quarter for 60 minutes. How unstoppable can they be then?
