This spring, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton named former quarterbacks coach Davis Webb the team's new offensive coordinator, a title that will include play-calling duties.
Webb, 31, has only called plays once in a (preseason) game last summer, but he is quickly rising up the coaching ranks despite his age and relative inexperience. Webb credits his rise, in part, to his coaching tree.
“I’ve been blessed my whole life to be around a lot of good coaches," Webb said in June. "Kliff Kingsbury, Brian Daboll, Ben McAdoo was hot for a while, especially early in my [playing] career. I’ve been with Adam Gase, I’ve been with Mike Kafka and then the best one I’ve been with is upstairs, gold jacket, Hall of Fame head coach, play caller, culture builder.
"So for the last three years, sitting next to him in every single staff meeting, every single offensive game plan meeting has rubbed off in a lot of ways. He was great that day [that I called plays], and it’s been a really good start thus far.”
Webb will call plays during training camp and preseason this summer, then the real test will arrive when the regular season begins in September. He'll have Payton available for advice and input along the way, and there might not be a better mentor in the NFL for such a role.
Webb drew head coach interest from three teams this spring, and if Denver's offense looks good this fall, the young play caller will likely be a hot candidate again in 2027. Webb is on the rise, and the Broncos are happy to have him remaining with the club for at least one more season.
