After being cut by the Denver Broncos on Sunday, rookie tight end Justin Joly was claimed off waivers by the Miami Dolphins on Monday, according to the NFL's transaction wire.
Joly (6-3, 241 pounds) was picked by the Broncos out of NC State in the fifth round (152nd overall) of April's NFL draft. He projects as a promising receiving tight end but seemingly struggled with the physical level of NFL play this summer, and his blocking was not up to the standard of Denver's tight end room.
After the team waived Joly on Sunday, general manager George Paton explained that the team knew Joly was "raw" coming into the league, and an offseason injury slowed the rookie's progress this summer. Joly will now get a fresh start in Miami.
The Broncos are going
into the regular season with Evan Engram, Adam Trautman, Nate Adkins and Dallen Bentley set to serve as their top four tight ends on the active roster. Engram is the only true receiving threat in that group — the three others are known more for their blocking ability.
