Matt Okada of the league's official website recently published his list of the biggest remaining roster issues for all 32 NFL teams, and Denver Broncos fans will probably have no arguments with his pick for Denver.
Okada identified tight end as the Broncos' biggest roster issue, and it's an easy case to make. From his NFL.com piece:
The Broncos arguably saw the least turnover in the league this offseason and have a Super-Bowl-contending roster in my book. But they also did next to nothing to improve at tight end after a disappointing 2025 campaign from Evan Engram (461 yards, one TD) and the entire tight end room (seventh-fewest receiving yards in the NFL). Adam Trautman is used primarily as an in-line blocker, so unless Engram posts a bounce-back
season or fifth-round rookie Justin Joly is a surprise breakout, Sean Payton will likely go another year without his coveted versatile tight end in Denver.
Denver did select a pair of tight ends during April's draft (Joly in the fifth round and Dallen Bentley in the seventh round), but neither player is projected to have a massive impact in 2026. Joly could be the team's projected long-term receiving threat at the position, but it would be a surprise if a fifth-round pick was among the team's top receivers in his rookie season.
Trautman is known primarily for his blocking and Engram, as Okada noted, underwhelmed last season. So unless Engram takes a big step forward (or Joly has a surprise rookie campaign), tight end will likely remain one of the team's biggest weaknesses this season.
