The Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Rams will put their cross-conference winning streaks on the line when they face off on Sunday Night Football in Week 3.
The Broncos have won nine straight games against NFC opponents. That's the longest of such streaks in the NFL, but coach Sean Payton wasn't aware of it until he was informed on Wednesday.
"[I]f you win 14 games or 15 games, you’re probably going to have some sort of, ‘in a row,’ but I wasn’t aware of the NFC-AFC thing," Payton said. "It’s taken me a couple of years to figure out who I’m rooting against for being however many years in the NFC. So then pretty soon you figure it out.”
The Rams aren't far behind Denver as they've won eight straight games against AFC foes.
Meanwhile, Broncos quarterback
Bo Nix is 9-1 against NFC teams in his career, with his lone loss being his first career start in the NFL. He brushed it off as mostly a coincidence.
"I think that’s just by schedule, by chance," Nix said of his record against cross-conference opponents. "We’ve competed against some really good teams. We’ve had some close NFC matchups. One that I remember is last year, the Eagles. They gave us a challenge, and we had to come back and same with the Giants. So we’ve had to play some complete football against these teams, and so I think it’s just by chance and by schedule.
"Obviously, you play more AFC teams, usually, typically year-to-year, so the pool is smaller. I think we’re playing good football when we play out of the league, but obviously that doesn’t win us the next game. So we just have to keep at it, and work hard out here on the field, practice hard and just get ready for the next one.”
Nix and Denver will look to keep the streak alive when the Rams visit Empower Field at Mile High on Sunday.
