Last week, ESPN's Adam Schefter caused a stir when he reported that the Denver Broncos contacted New Orleans Saints reserve/retired quarterback Drew Brees about potentially coming out of retirement to play for the Broncos in the AFC Championship game last season.
Brees considered it, but after working out, he realized past wrist and shoulder injuries would not allow him to play. Now, following Schefter's reporting, it remains to be seen if the NFL will discipline the Broncos for potential tampering.
With Brees unable to play, the Broncos started Jarrett Stidham in the place of an injured Bo Nix. Stidham had two costly turnovers in a 10-7 loss to the New England Patriots in the AFC title game as Denver was knocked out of the playoffs.
Last week,
the Denver Gazette's Chris Tomasson asked Stidham about the team reaching out to Brees.
“I kind of found out with everyone else … Super wild," Stidham told Tomasson. "Obviously he’d been retired (five years). It would have been nuts."
Stidham also said he wasn't offended that the Broncos considered other QB options after Nix broke his ankle. Stidham returned as the team's backup QB this season, a role he has held since coach Sean Payton arrived in 2023.
