The Denver Broncos' defensive masterclass helped rattle Super Bowl-winning quarterback Sam Darnold on Thursday night into two interceptions.
The brains behind that masterclass was defensive coordinator Vance Joseph. In a call with Emmanuel Acho after the game, he detailed the final interception from Ja'Quan McMillian on the first drive of overtime.
"It was a Cover 2 trap; we showed him a single high, and rolled to a Cover 2 on the snap," Joseph said. "Listen, our main package tonight was playing cloud and playing two-man to (wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba) all day. Once they figured out what we were doing, they were taking shots away from JSN. So we showed him that same coverage, and rolled away and played clouds back to the field, and we caught
Sam, we laid eyes to the flat, he took the rail, assuming it was Cover 1 or single-high, and (Ja'Quan McMillian) was playing the half, and not the curl, flat out of the seam area."
I hopped on FaceTime with @Broncos brilliant D Coordinator, Vance Joseph, immediately following his win vs the Seahawks.

NFL Films also released a short clip of the defensive backs stressing eye discipline on Darnold on the final drive. After McMillian's interception, Joseph was seen calling McMillian "a special player."
"Make him throw a long ball, let the safety be over the top."

McMillian credited the defensive line with making Darnold uncomfortable enough on the last play to throw the interception.
"It starts with the defensive line," McMillian said. "They were getting after the quarterback all night, so he was feeling the pressure. Then 'VJ' made a great call. We were in Cover-2, I was playing half and he kind of just threw the ball up in the hole shot. He thought he had the hole shot, and I just flashed across the receiver's face and made a play on the ball."
The defense has been playing really well to this point, and has kept the Broncos in games. Let's hope they can keep up the great work in the coming weeks as the schedule on paper gets easier to stomach.
