One of the biggest headlines from the Denver Broncos' 28-24 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 8 is that Denver may have found their new No. 1 workhorse in the backfield in rookie running back Jonah Coleman.
Coleman had 104 total scrimmage yards on 15 total touches in the victory, and also had the go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Coleman is just two games removed from coming off the injured reserve with a high ankle sprain suffered in Week 2.
Coleman is starting to take carries away from veteran J.K. Dobbins while RJ Harvey is on the injured reserve for at least three more weeks. However, NFL analyst Kay Adams believes that Coleman's role could elevate him to possibly winning Offensive Rookie of the Year.
"I was sold on Jonah
Coleman before he was a Bronco," Adams said on FanDuel TV’s Up & Adams show. "His size, his demeanor, I was instantly in love with Jonah Coleman. He came on my show... the day he was drafted and he goes to the team I told him I could see him on and that's the Broncos. Their run game is here, and my goodness did he take it over (in Week 8). If Jonah Coleman continues to lead this backfield, as he should, as I'm pleading to Sean Payton, who got that 200th win that everybody's yapping about; if you keep giving it to Jonah Coleman like this, he's going to end up winning Rookie of the Year. No hyperbole. He takes complete control of this backfield in the second half (of the season).
"He's leading all rookies with four and a half yards per carry. He leads all rookie running backs in total yards per game. Even though he's only averaging, guys, eight, what is it? Eight. Eight touches. Are you kidding? Eight touches per game, guys, going into Sunday."

With any luck, Coleman will take over the starting job, with Dobbins in a supporting role. Since he missed four games, Coleman may not rise to the level of Offensive Rookie of the Year, but he can still make a tremendous impact on the Broncos' offense now and moving forward.
Up next, Coleman and Denver go on the road to face the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
