Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton is taking back play-calling duties from offensive coordinator Davis Webb, Payton confirmed after Thursday's practice.
Payton doesn't usually speak on Thursdays — the team's designated day for coordinators to speak — but after reports emerged of Payton taking back play-calling duties, the coach spoke to media members after practice.
“I’ll call the plays," Payton said.
The 62-year-old coach reiterated that he believes Webb is a future head coach in the NFL, but he's taking over the play-calling ahead of Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Denver was at risk of losing Webb, 31, this offseason, so Payton promoted him from quarterbacks coach to OC, and that new title initially included play-calling.
After the offense struggled through the first four games of the season, Payton is now taking that role back.

The Broncos' offense ranked sixth-worst in points (18.5) and yards per game (280.3) in the NFL through the first four games of the season. Last year, Denver ranked 14th in points (23.6) and 10th in yards (342.6) with Payton calling plays.
