If the NFL plans to investigate the Denver Broncos for potentially tampering with reserve/retired New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, they aren't announcing it. At least not at the moment.
The league "declined comment" when contacted by Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk and asked if the Broncos might have violated league rules when two coaches contacted Brees during last season's NFL playoffs.
After losing Bo Nix to a broken ankle in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs, former assistant Denver coaches Joe Lombardi and Pete Carmichael reached out to Brees about potentially playing for the Broncos in the AFC Championship game. That story was reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter and then confirmed by Brees himself.
Denver's head coach, Sean Payton,
said he did not hear about the Brees conversations until he attended the former quarterback's Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony in August. When asked about it on Tuesday, Payton said Brees reached out to Lombardi and Carmichael, contradicting Schefter and the retired QB.
It's unclear if Payton merely confused the facts or if he intentionally changed the narrative about who contacted who (or if both Schefter and Brees confused the facts). Either way, the Broncos could technically get in trouble for tampering, if the NFL chooses to take action. For now, the league has no comment on that matter.
