After a loss to the San Francisco 49ers, the Denver Broncos are sitting at 2-2 on the season and are facing a crucial next few games.
Despite winning two of their first four games, the Broncos have been quite unimpressive on offense in three of those games. The other required a furious fourth-quarter comeback.
Much has been made about the lackluster play of Bo Nix, and new offensive coordinator Davis Webb has been called into question repeatedly in this young season. But if the Broncos could get a running game going, it would be the best medicine possible for the stagnant offense.
The Broncos were confident in handing J.K. Dobbins a two-year contract this offseason. But through four games, he's rushed for only 161 yards and averaged just 3.5 yards per
carry. In addition, he just doesn't look like the same player as last year before his Week 10 foot injury.
RJ Harvey has been a little better, averaging 4.1 yards per carry, but he's only carried the ball 12 times. Neither player looks ready to lead any rushing offense. Unfortunately, the Broncos don't have many good options to cure that problem.
Broncos desperately need Jonah Coleman back on the field
The best potential answer for the Broncos is to get rookie fourth-round pick Jonah Coleman back on the field. Though he's only been able to show a small sample size this season, his play against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2 was highly encouraging. Sadly, that game ended with him spraining his ankle.
Coleman hasn't played since and was placed on injured reserve, meaning he'll miss at least two more games. But when he's ready to get back, the Broncos need to get him on the field and call his number often.
The Broncos need something to jump-start this rushing attack. The lack of a running game was as big a reason as any for their AFC Championship game loss last year, and Sean Payton and his staff need to nip that in the bud now before it's too late.
