The Denver Broncos once again floundered on offense, which seems to be a recurring issue early in the 2026 season. Through the first four games of the year, the Broncos have scored double-digit points in each of their games, but in each of their two wins, they have had to come from behind from double-digits.
Many are pinning the difficult start of offensive coordinator Davis Webb, who is in his first year of playcalling after Payton handed him those duties this offseason. Payton, for his part, has stood up for Webb in press conferences and media appearances since relinquishing the reins to the playbook ahead of the 2026 season.
However, after yet another slow start to a game where the Broncos could have taken advantage of an equally slow start from
their opponent, there may be some early signs of wavering from Payton on Webb.
"It's too early to (consider a change in playcalling)," Payton said in his postgame remarks from Levi's Stadium. "It's a fair question. I appreciate it. Man, it's tough to discuss any of that right now."
Sean Payton on if he’s considering any change to his play-calling situation with Davis Webb:

Payton won't make an irrational decision immediately after a loss, but the question is fair. If there is a change, it certainly won't be the same as what happened to Colorado State over the weekend, when their defensive coordinator was relieved of his duties and stormed off the field mid-game. The Broncos have only scored 13 first-half points in 60 minutes of early-game action, a trend that is sure to concern pundits, players and fans alike as Denver comes into the final leg of their most difficult stretch of the season.
However, quarterback Bo Nix still has a lot of faith in Webb, and what he's trying to do.
"I’m real confident in him," Nix said postgame. "I think when you look at the overall landscape, we’ve played four of the tops teams in the league. [It’s] not easy for a first-time OC as young as he is to go against some of the, quite frankly, best teams in the league. He definitely is going to continue to work to put us in the right spots, and this isn’t necessarily the first time in my three-year career we’ve scored 14 points. I think it’s just overall something that we have to continue to help him and execute. As players, we have to put him in a better spot... We’re just not making it easy on him by any means right now. We just have to help him.”
Whatever the case is with Webb, it will certainly be a huge topic of discussion if the Broncos cannot get started on offense. They now have a stretch where they will have two games in a stretch of 11 days against some difficult competition. They have to get things figured out — and fast.
