After the NFL reinstated Denver Broncos outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper last week, the team has until next Monday to activate him to the 53-man roster (they will likely make a decision by Saturday).
After he was arrested twice in June following alleged incidents involving his former girlfriend, Cooper completed a 40-day "in-patient counseling, therapy, mental health and overall wellness program," according to 9News.
Following his reinstatement last week, Cooper wrote on social media that he has "spent a lot of time working to better myself," and that work "will continue." During his conference call with reporters on Tuesday, Broncos coach Sean Payton was asked about the steps Cooper has taken.
“He initiated the steps right away himself," Payton
said. "I won’t go into detail all the things that he felt were important. I think the league was on the same page, the club. A lot of it becomes a league issue at that point. To his credit, he didn’t back away at all from what he felt like was necessary.”
Cooper is facing multiple charges, including a felony assault charge, and his trial is scheduled for March. After he sat out the first six games of the season on the commissioner’s exempt list, Cooper will now be allowed to play this season with his trial pending. The NFL is also investigating the allegations against Cooper.
