For the second straight week, Denver Broncos linebacker Alex Singleton has been fined for an illegal play, and the latest infraction could turn into a suspension if Singleton commits future infractions.
Singleton, who was fined $11,492 for a late hit on Kansas City Chiefs running back Emmett Johnson in Week 1, has now been fined $17,911 for a hit on a defenseless player in Week 2, according to multiple reports. Singleton hit defenseless Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Brenton Strange in the third quarter of Sunday's 20-13 win.
Singleton was flagged for the hit and said, "Yeah, their coaches like to complain about people hitting people," when asked about it after the game. He also predicted a looming fine would be rescinded.
If the fine is not rescinded,
Singleton could be subject to even harsher discipline down the road. This offseason, the NFL announced that players who commit three offenses of designated player health and safety rules this season will be subject to an automatic one-game suspension. The five types of penalties that fall under that category are hip-drop tackles, horse-collar tackles, launching, hits on a defenseless player and blindside blocks.
So, after a hit on a defenseless player in Week 2, if Singleton commits two more health and safety violations this season, he would face a suspension in addition to his recent fines.
