Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy's journey to the NFL could not be more different. Purdy was selected as "Mr. Irrelevant" in the 2022 NFL draft, was the final quarterback on the depth chart for the 49ers after training camp, and ascended to stardom after injuries befell Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance, and Purdy led the 49ers to the postseason. Nix, on the other hand, was selected 12th overall in the 2024 NFL draft, played his way into the starting job in a preseason quarterback battle and has also played in the playoffs, leading his team to the brink of a Super Bowl.
Nix talked about his personal respect for Purdy, who has thrived since being named the Niner’s starter since late in the 2022 season.
Both Nix and Purdy have used their platforms to uplift and encourage, another great similarity between the two.
“I met him for the first time last year when we joint [practiced] with them,” Nix said on Wednesday. “I hear really good things about him, and I know he’s a great guy from what I’ve heard. He does a great job with his witness as well. I just appreciate that and admire that most about him. I think he uses his platform for much bigger things, as I like to do. Obviously he’s playing really good right now."
Nix talked about Purdy’s veteran leadership and his postseason experience. Purdy led San Francisco to a Super Bowl appearance during his young career.
“he’s one of those guys, he’s been to a Super Bowl, he’s played in a lot of big games,” Nix said. “He’s a really good quarterback in our league, probably a little bit underrated. I think it’s always just really cool when you’re watching around the league and you’re seeing different teams play and all that kind of stuff. The appreciation level is really high, and we respect each other and we know what each other goes through. At the end of the day, he’s playing really good.”
Both quarterbacks have earned their mutual respect. Purdy has already led his team to a 3-0 record, while Nix has engineered two come-from-behind wins in 2026. Week 4 is already becoming a highly-anticipated game, as both teams jockey for division and conference playoff positioning early in the season.
The Broncos hope to pull off their second straight win against the NFC West when they kick off from San Francisco at 2:25 on Sunday afternoon.
