One of the newest weapons in the Denver Broncos' offensive arsenal is rookie running back Jonah Coleman.
Coleman was a third-round selection of the Broncos in April's NFL draft, and he is now the third running back in the backfield rotation behind veterans J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey.
Coleman comes off a 2025 campaign where he recorded over 1,000 all-purpose yards in his final collegiate season at Washington. Quarterback Bo Nix is excited about the well-rounded possibilities Coleman will bring to the roster.
“You can tell he came from a developmental system in college," Nix said in early August. "I think he did a really good job. He was coached really well in college. They did a lot of versatile things, so when he gets here, it’s not as big of a jump.
He’s familiar with the verbiage, familiar with the positions that we’re putting him in and he’s just responding well. He’s great out of the backfield. He can run routes, he can catch and he’s explosive."
In two games of work during the preseason, Coleman had eight total touches for 31 total yards. Coach Sean Payton said that despite the seemingly light workload, he had seen more than enough from Coleman to solidify his place on the 53-man roster.
Nix noted Coleman's strengths within the schemes drawn up by offensive coordinator Davis Webb, believing they'd help the Denver offense level up in 2026.
"I think as a running back, his strength is running in between the tackles and being physical," Nix said. "So I think with how our offense is evolving, how our running back position goes, he does a really good job of being able to do both and run and catch the ball out of the backfield.”
Coleman is poised to make his NFL debut under the primetime lights on Monday, Sept. 14 against the Kansas City Chiefs. He figures to rotate in behind Dobbins and Harvey in Denver's backfield this fall.
