When the Denver Broncos (2-1) and the San Francisco 49ers (3-0) meet on Sunday afternoon, it will only be the 17th time ever these teams have met since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970.
The all-time series between the two teams is knotted at 8-8-0, per The Football Database. San Francisco and Denver met once in the playoffs, and it wasn't a pretty one. The Joe Montana-led 49ers crushed the John Elway-led Broncos 55-10 in Super Bowl XXIV, in the most lopsided loss in Super Bowl history. While the 49ers have just won one more Super Bowl since then, while the Broncos have won three championships in the subsequent years. Ironically, the most recent championship the Broncos won, was won inside of Levi's Stadium, home of the 49ers since 2014.
The last time
the Broncos and 49ers met, was a complete mess. It was during the 2022 season, during the ill-fated Nathaniel Hackett regime, and while quarterback Russell Wilson was still under center. The game, played during Sunday Night Football, resulted in 10 Denver punts, a 49ers safety, and a final score of 11-10.
It's safe to say that both teams are looking for a more mistake-free, higher scoring affair in Week 4.
