Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix had a very direct response to his and the team's weak Week 1 performance against the Kansas City Chiefs. Nix himself was responsible for the Broncos' two turnovers, including an interception on the third play of the game, and a late fumble. Nix put the ball on the deck three times, losing one fumble in the 31-10 loss.
"I think we just let ourselves down," Nix said postgame. "I think it’s more disappointing than frustrating. I’m not necessarily filled with rage, we just let ourselves down, shot ourselves in the foot, literally gave ourselves no chance to succeed today. We made it easier for them, point blank period. We know we have to be better."
Nix accounted for 133 total yards and one touchdown, but the rest
of the game was filled with miscues, drops and Nix running for his life in the pocket. The Broncos only had 176 yards of total offense, outgained by a 2-1 margin by the Chiefs. Nix knows the only way to go is up after a performance like the one on Monday night.
"There are a lot of guys in that locker room that are going to take ownership and be better," Nix said. "It starts with me and it starts with our offense. We’re going to be better. We don’t have a choice but to get better. It was a nasty wake-up call today.”
Nix was also reflective after the game. He was asked what good could come out of a loss such as this one, and if this could set the tone for the season to come. Nix acknowledged the mistakes made as a whole, and admitted the offense's shortcomings.
"I think you learn how important it is to not kill yourself," Nix said. "That goes without saying, but when you do that in a game like today, it just raises that a little higher. I just felt like it was penalty, after penalty, after penalty. Nobody has good plays to call when you are in 2nd-and-long, 3rd-and-long. The play sheet is very small. We didn’t put anybody in a good spot today. We really didn’t.”
Nix and the rest of the team need to have a very short memory as they prepare for their home opener on Sunday. The Broncos needed to hit rock bottom in 2023 before the team began trending upward; maybe this is the reset they need to go deeper into the hardest stretch of the season.
