There's more smoke to the Davis Webb rumors.
Last night, former Denver Broncos wide receiver and current 104.3 The Fan pundit Brandon Stokley tweeted that head coach Sean Payton is taking play-calling duties back from Webb this week.
This morning, Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com "confirmed that, indeed, Payton will be calling the plays again."
Denver likely would have lost Webb to another team this offseason had the Broncos not promoted him from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator, and Payton also gave him play-calling duties with that new title. Through the first four weeks of the season, however, the offense has averaged the sixth-worst points (18.5) and yards per game (280.3). Last year, Denver ranked 14th in points (23.6) and 10th
in yards (342.6).
This week, the Broncos will face the Los Angeles Chargers, who rank ninth-best in points (20.0) and fifth-best in yards (285.2) allowed per contest. So while L.A. is still seeking its first win of the season, the Chargers still have a formidable defense.
Denver's coordinators — including Webb — have a weekly routine of speaking to the press on Thursdays. So we should hear from Webb after today's practice.
