The NFL told Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay that defensive back Josh Wallace should not have been penalized for pass interference late in a Sunday Night Football matchup with the Denver Broncos in Week 3.
McVay revealed during his Wednesday press conference that the league admitted it was an incorrect call by referee Bill Vinovich's crew. That won't change the result of Denver's 30-26 win over L.A., but it will add to the controversy of the call.
That DPI penalty negated Wallace's would-be interception, and the Broncos went on to score a go-ahead touchdown. The Rams did have another opportunity to score after that, but quarterback Matthew Stafford threw a game-losing interception on the game's final play.
Denver wide receiver Pat Bryant admitted
that he intentionally sold the contact to help draw a flag, but he also said Wallace "definitely" shoved him in the back, and Bryant believed it was DPI. The NFL apparently disagrees in hindsight.
