At last, we've heard from the man himself.
Following Brandon Stokley's initial report and Mike Florio's confirmation that Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton would take back play-calling duties from Davis Webb this week, ESPN and NFL Network were given the go-ahead to announce that Payton would have "an increased role" in the play-calling starting this week.
That was merely a diplomatic way of saying Payton is taking play-calling duties back from his offensive coordinator. Payton confirmed the news after Thursday's practice, announcing that he will be calling plays.
Webb spoke after Friday's practice. This was his reaction to the change:

Webb also
spoke about his meeting with Payton before the change:

The Broncos' offense has averaged the sixth-worst points (18.5) and sixth-worst yards per game (280.3) in the NFL this fall after ranking 14th in points (23.6) and 10th in yards (342.6) per game in 2025.
Denver's faced a tough slate of defenses, and quarterback Bo Nix and the run game have struggled, but Webb took a lot of heat for the team's offensive struggles. Payton is now stepping in ahead of Sunday's showdown with the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium.
