There's no question the Denver Broncos offense has struggled tremendously, and many have considered several factors: It's offensive coordinator Davis Webb's fault. It is the result of a terrible run game. But another very concerning question has to be considered: Is it quarterback Bo Nix's fault?
Nix finished Week 4 against the San Francisco 49ers 25-of-42 passing for 214 yards and one touchdown; however it took so long to get there. Nix completed just two passes over 20 yards, and hit checkdowns a lot of the time. An example of this is running back RJ Harvey led all pass-catchers with 10 receptions. Nix averaged just 5.1 yards per pass, while his San Francisco counterpart Brock Purdy averaged 7.1 yards per pass.
Quarterback guru Tim Jenkins was
baffled looking at the tape. Jenkins, who has covered Nix and broken down his film since his rookie season in 2024, just doesn't know what's going on.
In one of the clips he looked at, he broke down the lone touchdown pass Nix threw, a fourth-quarter strike to Jaylen Waddle.
"(This is) actually very similar to some of the other concepts where we're just gonna really stretch a portion of the field, which against this Niners defense, it really feels like the game plan going into this was: 'We're just gonna rip this thing and Jaylen Waddle's obviously gonna make someone miss in space, and we're going to walk in for six,'" Jenkins said.
"Yet again we are sitting here going 'What in the world is going on?' Why is this offense not clean like this all the time?"
Jenkins had no good answers by the end of his analysis.
"What do I say to close this out?" Jenkins said. "If we are to say, 'Where are Bo Nix's struggles,' or this Broncos offense in general that ultimately comes down to the quarterback... if I were to pinpoint on one thing, it's that we are not hunting with the football. We are not trying to drive this thing down the field when the situation presents itself.
"I guess the worst (case scenario) is just 'I'm not seeing it,' which that would be a whole different problem. Like are we hitting these Monday-Saturday and just not seeing them on Sunday? No matter what it is, it has to get addressed."
Nix has another chance to rebound against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 5, in what already feels like a critical game which could help save their season early. Can he come back and have a 300-yard, two-touchdown performance? With the way this team looks, it would be a stretch, but it is definitely within reach.
