Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix has acknowledged he needs to play better. If he doesn't improve soon, fans and pundits will continue to question whether Nix is the franchise's best long-term option at the position.
Earlier this week, Jeremy Fowler wrote about the "most intriguing quarterback contract situation" looming in 2027. Fowler believes Nix will be the most interesting QB contract story next offseason as the QB will be eligible for a fifth-year option (for the 2028 season) as he enters the final year of his rookie contract.
"He is a quality starter but is not poised to enter the upper echelon," Fowler wrote for ESPN. "Confidence appears to be an issue this season, raising questions about what this player-team marriage looks like long
term."
After acknowledging offensive struggles out of Nix's control, such as an inefficient rushing attack, Fowler concluded that, "Nix -- who broke his right ankle in January -- doesn't appear to be the runner he once was. His viability with Denver might hinge on how he plays over the next 11 or so games."
Nix will be eligible to have his fifth-year option exercised in January. Whether or not the Broncos pick up that option remains to be seen. A bigger conversation will be if Denver wants to give Nix a multi-year contract extension. The way he's playing right now, Nix wouldn't be a strong candidate for an extension. Nix will need to finish the 2026 season on a stronger note if he's going to get a second contract from the Broncos.
