The Denver Broncos have a lot to be excited about in the upcoming NFL season. The team was extremely close to reaching the Super Bowl last season and has what it takes to make it a reality this season.
There isn't much to be negative about heading into the season, much less anyone being on the proverbial hot seat. However, the "hot seat" can refer to more than just head coaches whose jobs are in jeopardy. In some cases, it can be a player who needs to step up their performance or a big signing or draft pick who needs to prove their worth.
Zachary Pereles of CBS Sports took a look at each of the 32 teams in the league and chose one player or coach from each franchise that fits that billing for the 2026 season. His choice for the Broncos is a debatable
one: new offensive coordinator Davis Webb.
"Part of Sean Payton's genius is his play calling, so for him to give that up to offensive coordinator Davis Webb could not have been an easy decision," Pereles wrote for CBS. "Webb is only 31 years old and a rising star in the profession, so getting the play-calling duties may have helped keep him in Denver this season, especially considering he drew head-coaching interest elsewhere. Expect Payton to still be heavily involved in the offense throughout the week and even on game days, but it'll ultimately be up to Webb to lead the way for a team with legitimate Super Bowl aspirations."
Does Davis Webb have the hottest seat in Denver?
You can make an argument that the top move the Broncos made this offseason was to promote Webb to offensive coordinator and turn over the play-calling duties to him. Sure, it may have been done to keep him in-house, but it was a necessary move as well.
Webb brings a new offensive mind that is obviously coveted around the league. He could have some ideas and philosophies that haven't been seen all over the league the same way Sean Payton's have. It gives the Broncos a chance to have an edge that makes the difference between getting to the Super Bowl and falling short, as they did last year.
Webb should not be considered to be on any hot seat, regardless of the huge shoes he has to fill. Instead, player options such as J.K. Dobbins and Jonathon Cooper might be better selections.
Dobbins was signed to a new two-year deal during the offseason despite never playing a full regular season. Cooper got himself into some hot water during the offseason and his future seems quite unclear at this point.
