Denver Broncos wide receiver Marvin Mims is on the verge of making NFL history.
As Adam Harstad pointed out on Twitter/X earlier this week, the NFL's all-time record for the best yards-per-punt-return average in a career is 14.3, currently held by New England Patriots cornerback Marcus Jones.
However, Mims has averaged 15.8 yards per punt return in his career. Mims does not hold the record, though, because the qualifying minimum number of returns for the record is 75, and Mims has 74 so far. So as long as Mims does not lose 98 yards on his next punt return, he's about to break the NFL's (official) record.
Fun (to me) oddity: Marvin Mims needs at least negative 97 yards on his next punt return to set the all-time NFL record for career punt return average.
He's one return away from the qualifying minimum, and as long as he doesn't lose 98 yards on that return, the record is his.

Mims has totaled 1,172 yards and scored one touchdown on 74 punt returns while adding 1,249 yards and another touchdown on 47 career kickoff returns. Add those totals to his 1,202 receiving yards and 150 rushing yards and Mims has accounted for 3,773 all-purpose yards and scored 11 touchdowns through his first three years in the NFL.
A two-time All-Pro and two-time Pro Bowler, Mims is a do-everything weapon for the Broncos, and he's on the verge of (officially) making NFL history.
