The Denver Broncos' 28-24 comeback win over the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 8 on Sunday was dramatic, and a historic one in terms of the Broncos' late-game heroics.
Sunday's win marked the 15th one-score game the Broncos
have won in a row dating back to last fall, when Denver made their mark as closers in the fourth quarter. The win streak ties the NFL-best mark left by the Peyton Manning-led Indianapolis Colts from 2008-09.The Broncos have found a way to pull victory out of the jaws of defeat, and coach Sean Payton believes it goes all the way back to when Denver beat the Philadelphia Eagles on the road in Week 5 last fall.
"I think honestly, to answer that, I think it has to come from, well, we did it before," Payton said in his postgame remarks.
"I would go back to Philly at Philly after playing Cincinnati on a Monday. I think that’s the first — that would be where my brain would go where we grew a little bit. Then there’s a belief that can get stronger and then there’s experience and then you’re seasoned a little, but we still have a lot of things to fix. I honestly think that’s where I believe it comes from.”
The Broncos have now won 15 straight one-score games in the regular season.

That's tied for the longest streak in NFL history, according to ESPN.
Bo Nix also set another mark for himself as the leader of these late-game comebacks. No opponent lead is safe from Nix, who is averaging over eight points in the fourth quarter alone, which is an NFL-best since 1950. Nix has also engineered 15 game-winning drives and 12 fourth-quarter comebacks, the most in the NFL since being selected with the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft.
Terrific stat after the #Broncos' 15-point 4th quarter vs. KC:

In Bo Nix's career, the Broncos have averaged 8.1 points in the 4th quarter. It's the most average points in the 4th Q for any starting QB since at least 1950.

Following a time in which Nix struggled early in the season, it seems like he's turned a corner after coming out of his funk with a big touchdown run against the Arizona Cardinals and recording back-to-back 200-yard passing performances in Weeks 7 and 8.
Bo Nix has a 118.9 passer rating when down 1-8 points in 4th quarter (playoffs included). That ranks first among 169 QBs with 75+ attempts in that scenario since 1991

Though it shouldn't always be this hard, the Broncos are finding a way to make the most of their opportunities late.
Better late than never, right?
