For the Denver Broncos, their Week 2 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars provided an opportunity for several players and coaches to bounce back after a forgettable Week 1 outing against the Kansas City Chiefs. Perhaps no one seized the moment more than Broncos offensive coordinator Davis Webb.
After the offense only put up 176 total yards in Week 1, the Broncos more than doubled their output in Week 2, totaling 392 yards and 20 points in the victory. With Webb once again behind the headset, the Broncos put up several explosive plays, including a 49-yard bomb from quarterback Bo Nix to Jaylen Waddle, and a more involved run game.
Despite a first half where the Broncos scored only three points after two goal-to-go drives, Webb and the offense responded
with 17 unanswered points in the second half.
Coach Sean Payton gave Webb due credit in the afterglow of the 20-13 comeback victory.
"There were a lot of things we all didn’t do well (in Week 1), starting with me, defensively, all of that," Payton acknowledged after the game. "So it’s tough to go back to work, tough for Davis [Webb]. He responded the right way, the meetings, how he handled the schedule, and then the first half and all of that. You keep grinding at it. Things really picked up in the second half, and that was important. There was a certain way we wanted to play this game. I’m pleased that we were able to play that game, especially in the second half. We played it that way defensively in the first half. We had opportunities, and we came away with just one field goal. The second half was much better.”

Throughout the first half, the CBS broadcast team showed Webb's strong emotions as the two red zone drives ended in just a field goal. That spark ignited a fire in the offense in the second half, and the Broncos responded after adversity reared its ugly head.
"He stuck to the plan, he stuck to his game plan," Nix said of Webb in his postgame remarks. "Even though at the beginning we didn’t have a lot of success and we didn’t move the ball like we wanted to and go down and score a whole bunch of touchdowns in the first quarter, he just stuck to the game plan, and by the second half, he was calling the plays and doing a really good job of getting us in good spots. I thought today we did a good job of running the football on base downs and that was an emphasis of what we wanted to do."
Nix credited the second half success and balance of the run to the pass in Week 2 to Webb's playcalling and game planning.
"We found some really good run plays that we liked throughout the game," Nix said. "Some that were keeping them off balance that we were getting some chunk yardage with and our [running] backs ran the ball well. So overall it was a well-balanced game plan by him and it was a really good job calling it as the game went. He never panics, he never gets in a flustered situation, he just chooses the play with conviction and allows us to go out there and play well."
Webb will hope to pair the Broncos' second-half success with the first-half grind in the coming weeks as the Broncos come to the middle of the toughest stretch of the year in Weeks 3-6. It sounds like Webb is on the right track at the right time.
