After Ohio State's loss and Miami's strong offensive performance in their win over North Carolina, Miami quarterback Darian Mensah is a new Heisman favorite. His top receiver, Malachi Toney, is also considered a serious Heisman candidate.
Among other changes, Oklahoma State quarterback Drew Mestemaker saw his odds rise after his five-touchdown performance against Iowa State. He now leads the FBS in touchdown passes with 25. Oregon State wide receiver Jesse Legree remains a long-shot Heisman candidate, leading the country in receiving yards (1,110) and touchdowns (14).
Below are the eight players with the best Heisman Trophy betting odds entering Week 10 via BetMGM:
WR Jesse Legree, Oregon State
Current odds: +6000
While he may not win the Heisman because he isn't at a Power
Four school, Legree's season has still been incredibly impressive. With his numbers, he deserves to be at least a Heisman finalist. It would have been fascinating to see him in the playoffs, but that seems less likely after Oregon State's loss to Fresno State.
QB Gunner Stockton, Georgia
Current odds: +5000
As the quarterback for the favorite to win the National Championship, it makes sense that he would be considered a Heisman candidate. However, his numbers are not as spectacular as Mensah or Mestemaker, so he is not really in contention for the Heisman.
QB Drew Mestemaker, Oklahoma State
Current odds: +5000
It is a shame Oklahoma State doesn't have a defense, because Mestemaker could win the National Championship on the right team. He is an electric quarterback, transferring what he did at North Texas last year to a Power Four conference with ease. Mestemaker is now considered the top quarterback in the NFL draft, so this is probably his last year in college.
QB Trinidad Chambliss, Ole Miss
Current odds: +1500
He finished No. 8 in Heisman voting last year and is having another strong campaign this year. However, the interceptions are a problem. After only having three interceptions last season, he already has eight picks this year. That is not winning football, nor is it the performance of a Heisman quarterback.
QB CJ Carr, Notre Dame
Current odds: +1200
Carr is a good quarterback on a good team. He doesn't have the same electric performance or excitement as Mensah or Mestemaker. He may be a finalist for the Heisman at the end of the season, but it seems highly unlikely he'll be in serious contention.
WR Malachi Toney, Miami
Current odds: +325
Toney's greatest competition for the Heisman is his own quarterback. However, there is a strong case for why he should receive the Heisman instead of Mensah. Mensah's numbers largely come from Toney's performance, with 1,027 receiving yards and 13 receiving touchdowns. How he and Mensah perform against Notre Dame will be a true test of whether either should be a Heisman winner.
WR Jeremiah Smith, Ohio State
Current odds: +275
Quarterback Julian Sayin's injury rippled through the rankings. It not only significantly reduced Ohio State's chances of winning the title after they were once the favorites, but it also hurt Jeremiah Smith's chances of winning the Heisman after he was previously considered the favorite. Unless the Buckeyes' quarterback play improves significantly next week, it is hard to see Smith win the Heisman despite how well he started the year.
QB Darian Mensah, Miami
Current odds: +150
Mensah may be the most electric quarterback in all of college football. He leads the country in touchdown passes with 25, half of which are to Toney. His completion percentage of over 80 percent and his quarterback rating of 202.7 are also the best in the country. Mensah's 188 pass attempts so far this season lead the ACC. A poor performance against Notre Dame could hurt his Heisman chances, but a win could help him solidify his chances.
