With each passing week, the Heisman odds continue to shift. Arch Manning certainly helped his case after leading Texas to a comeback win over Ohio State. At the same time, Darian Mensah and Miami went off again versus Florida A&M, scoring 77 points in three quarters. Buckeyes receiver Jeremiah Smith also saw his odds increase despite the loss.
There is also a newcomer to the top eight Heisman candidates: USC quarterback Jayden Maiava, who had three touchdown passes against Louisiana in the Trojans' third win of the season. Meanwhile, Oregon quarterback Dante Moore dropped out of the top eight after the Ducks' loss to Oklahoma State.
Below are the nine players with the best Heisman Trophy betting odds entering Week 3 via BetMGM:
QB Josh Hoover, Indiana
Current Odds: +2000
After falling out of the top eight, Hoover is technically tied for the eighth-best odds to win the Heisman after his four-touchdown performance against Howard. However, he threw the ball only 11 times, with four completions. That is not Heisman material. This offense relies far too much on the running game for Hoover to win the Heisman.
QB Jayden Maiava, USC
Current Odds: +2000
Throwing five touchdowns in a game certainly makes headlines, and it seems like that is probably why Maiava's Heisman odds are increasing. He currently has 10 touchdowns this year in three games with only one interception and nearly 900 passing yards. The numbers are there to be a Heisman candidate, but he is still more of a dark horse candidate than an actual contender right now.
QB Julian Sayin, Ohio State
Current Odds: +1700
Losing to Texas did not help his Heisman odds. Right now, his own teammate in Jeremiah Smith has a better case to be the Heisman at the end of this year than Sayin does. Sayin was my personal favorite going into the season, but because of this loss, I would no longer bet on him to win the Heisman unless they beat Indiana in a few weeks.
QB Trinidad Chambliss, Ole Miss
Current Odds: +1300
Chambliss had a strong first game, helping the Rebels beat Louisville in their opener, then carried that momentum into a dominant win over Charlotte. Chambliss had a near-perfect Week 2 with only three incompletions on 26 pass attempts and two touchdowns. Winning against his former head coach, Lane Kiffin, and LSU would allow Chambliss' Heisman odds to skyrocket. He is someone to watch as the season goes on.
QB CJ Carr, Notre Dame
Current Odds: +1100
Simply put, I do not believe CJ Carr is going to win the Heisman. Maybe he will be a finalist, but he won't win. He completed 80 percent of his passes and had four touchdowns against Rice, but there is just something about him. Other Heisman candidates feel like players who can take over a game and dominate. CJ Carr doesn't feel like that type of player quite yet.
WR Malachi Toney, Miami
Current Odds: +1000
Here is someone who can take over a game. He only had four receptions for 96 yards and a touchdown in Miami's most recent game compared to his 12 receptions for 234 yards and three touchdowns in the opener. However, he is clearly one of the best receivers in college football right now and a strong Heisman candidate.
QB Arch Manning, Texas
Current Odds: +800
Arch Manning finally had his signature win in college with a 20-point comeback against Ohio State. Statistically, though, he did not do much. He only had 195 passing yards, averaging 5.3 yards per attempt, and a touchdown. Numbers aren't the only factor in winning the Heisman, but they are a factor. I do not believe his numbers will be good enough at the end of the season to win the Heisman.
Ohio State WR Jeremiah Smith
Current Odds: +700
Watching Jeremiah Smith in the first half or so against Texas, it looked like he was unstoppable. He ultimately finished the game with eight receptions for 164 yards and a touchdown, which is his best performance against the Longhorns by far. Right now, Smith is my new favorite to win the Heisman. He is clearly better than almost anyone on the field and has been one of the top players in college football for multiple years now.
Miami QB Darian Mensah
Current Odds: +450
Miami's offense looks like the most explosive offense in college football right now, and Mensah is their quarterback, so it only makes sense that he is the current favorite for the Heisman. However, in the Hurricanes' second game, they relied more on the run game than their passing attack, while in the first game against Stanford it was the opposite. Until they start division play, it will be hard to tell whether Mensah will put up the numbers to win the Heisman. Their game against Notre Dame in November should be the most telling.
