Colorado football has been at fall camp for less than 24 hours, and there is already a change on the coaching staff.
Receivers coach Jason Phillips is no longer listed in Colorado's official staff directory
, and his profile page now returns a 404 error. He was also not present when the football staff was introduced to the team during the program's first fall camp meeting, a sign that he may have already moved on from the program.Colorado has not publicly confirmed Phillips' departure, but the signs point to Rashad Davis taking over the receivers room. During the team meeting, Davis introduced himself simply as "receivers coach," suggesting his role has expanded heading into camp. BuffBlitz's Brian Howell reported (subscription required) that
Phillips stepped away from the program to deal with a family issue.
Davis had already talked in the spring about taking on a more hands-on role with the wideouts. At the time, he said his job was shifting from energy and communication to more direct development on and off the field.
The move would also fit with Colorado's broader offensive changes. New coordinator Brennan Marion is installing a Go-Go system that puts a premium on blocking and physical play from the receiver group, which may have created a natural fit issue with Phillips' previous approach.
"Blocking to me is a ‘want to,’" Phillips said in the spring. "We don’t do any drills for it, to be quite honest with you. To me, that’s internal."
Whether the change was philosophical or simply part of the staff reset, Colorado enters camp with one more adjustment to manage.
