After a wild Week 3 of college football, there has been a major shift in the Heisman Odds. Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss has moved into a tie with Miami quarterback Darian Mensah as the favorite to win the Heisman. In contrast, USC quarterback Jayden Maiava and Indiana quarterback Josh Hoover have dropped out of the top nine.
One newcomer to the Heisman contenders is Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell after his 320-yard passing performance with three touchdowns against Florida State. He also had 56 rushing yards with a touchdown. Another newcomer is Mississippi State quarterback Kamario Taylor. Taylor is the only Heisman candidate whose team is not in the top 20. Through the first three games, he has 832 yards and 11 passing touchdowns.
He has another 178 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Below are the nine players with the best Heisman Trophy betting odds entering Week 3 via BetMGM:
QB Julian Sayin, Ohio State
Current Odds: +3000
Sayin's Heisman odds are slowly getting worse, even though he's playing well. The problem is that other players are doing better, especially among quarterbacks. He will have multiple chances this season to prove he can be Superman like some of the other quarterbacks in college football. But until then, he really should not be considered a Heisman candidate.
QB Keelon Russell, Alabama
Current Odds: +2500
This seems like recent bias. He had a good game against Florida State, who has given Alabama problems in recent years. Through the first three games, he has only four passing touchdowns and two interceptions. Those are not Heisman numbers, and Russell will probably drop out of Heisman contention after this week.
QB CJ Carr, Notre Dame
Current Odds: +1400
Carr has fine numbers through the first three weeks. He has completed 72.6 percent of his passes, has 726 passing yards, and six passing touchdowns. Notre Dame is currently ranked No. 3 in the US LBM Coaches Poll, which is probably why Carr is considered a Heisman contender, but he seems unlikely to win.
WR Malachi Toney, Miami
Current Odds: +1000
Through the first three weeks of the season, Malachi Toney is second in the NCAA in receiving yards with 444 yards and five receiving touchdowns. He could certainly win the Heisman this year and will be fun to watch through the rest of the season.
QB Kamario Taylor, Mississippi State
Current Odds: +1000
Mississippi State is going into a ranked battle against Missouri before taking on Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma, and Texas. If Taylor can excel in those games, he may stay in Heisman contention. His touchdowns are definitely impressive. However, he doesn't seem like a true Heisman candidate.
WR Jeremiah Smith, Ohio State
Current Odds: +1000
Jeremiah Smith just became Ohio State's leading receiver, which is quite an accomplishment given all the talent coming out of that school. So far, he has 400 receiving yards and three touchdowns, including 164 yards in their matchup against Texas. Among non-quarterbacks, Smith is probably my favorite to win the Heisman at this point.
QB Arch Manning, Texas
Current Odds: +1000
Arch Manning's Heisman odds shot up after Texas' win against Ohio State, but Manning did not put up great numbers in that game. He didn't even have a good statistical performance in their win against UTSA. Manning may be a Manning, but he does not have the numbers to win the Heisman.
QB Trinidad Chambliss, Ole Miss
Current Odds: +325
Trinidad Chambliss looked like the Heisman winner in Ole Miss' win again over LSU. He led the Rebels to that win despite how emotional it was for him and the rest of the team. Chambliss makes Ole Miss a serious contender because he is one of the most dangerous quarterbacks in college football.
QB Darian Mensah, Miami
Current Odds: +325
Miami's offense is electric, and Mensah drives it. However, they cooled off a bit against Wake Forest, scoring only 31 points, though Mensah threw three touchdowns. He also has yet to throw an interception. Personally, I favor Chambliss, but Mensah certainly looks like a Heisman finalist.
