It is no surprise that Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith is still the Heisman favorite after six weeks of college football. However, a lot has changed among the contenders behind him.
The Big 12 finally has a Heisman contender in Oklahoma State quarterback Drew Mestemaker, while Mississippi State quarterback Kamario Taylor is still considered a long shot. Arch Manning's Heisman odds plummeted after two costly interceptions in the Red River Rivalry against Oklahoma.
Below are the ten players with the best Heisman Trophy betting odds entering Week 7 via BetMGM:
QB Kamario Taylor, Mississippi State
Current Odds: +4000
Mississippi State had a bye last week, but Taylor's last game against Alabama was incredibly rough. Taylor took himself out of the Heisman conversation with that game,
but he can still have a great year this season.
QB Drew Mestemaker, Oklahoma State
Current Odds: +4000
Mestemaker is the first Big 12 player to enter the Heisman conversation. While Mestemaker doesn't have a real shot at winning, he could at least get some votes and finish in the top 10 in Heisman voting. He is having a very good season with the Cowboys, with 13 touchdown passes, but he's struggled with interceptions, and he already has five.
QB Arch Manning, Texas
Current Odds: +4000
Manning's chances of winning the Heisman and being the No. 1 overall pick in the draft are gone after throwing two costly interceptions against Oklahoma. One was returned for a touchdown, and the other set up the Sooners' game-winning field goal. He can still have a strong rest of the season, though.
QB Julian Sayin, Ohio State
Current Odds: +3500
Having Jeremiah Smith at wide receiver really boosts your numbers. Still, Sayin finished the Buckeyes' game against Maryland with over 200 passing yards and four touchdowns. Sayin has 17 touchdowns through just six games and has played well. So, he could be a finalist at the end of the season.
QB Trinidad Chambliss, Ole Miss
Current Odds: +1500
Chambliss had another impressive game against Vanderbilt, completing two-thirds of his passes, throwing for over 200 yards and three touchdowns. In my estimation, he is the best quarterback in college football right now. Even though Florida dismantled him, Chambliss will be a Heisman finalist by the end of the year.
QB Keelon Russell, Alabama
Current Odds: +1500
Russell did not have the best game against Georgia. He was sacked on a crucial third down, forcing Alabama to punt back to the Bulldogs, who ran out the clock. He also threw for only 185 passing yards and one touchdown. However, there is a lot of room to grow for Russell, who is only a sophomore.
QB Gunner Stockton, Georgia
Current Odds: +1500
Stockton came out on the winning side of the Georgia-Alabama battle, though his defense did more of the work. Still, he finished with only four incompletions and a touchdown pass. Stockton also had a rushing touchdown in this game. Even if he does not end up a Heisman finalist, he is still one of the better quarterbacks in college football.
QB Darian Mensah, Miami
Current Odds: +1100
He may have been on bye last week, but Mensah is still the quarterback of one of college football's best offenses. His biggest test comes against Notre Dame in early November. Any weaknesses he has as a quarterback will be exploited by the Irish defense.
QB CJ Carr, Notre Dame
Current Odds: +1000
Notre Dame is the second-best team in the country according to the AP Poll, but that is not solely because of Carr. They rely heavily on their defense, though the quarterback has become a more important piece because their run game isn't quite as efficient as last season. It would help if Carr had an elite receiver, but he puts up solid numbers.
WR Jeremiah Smith, Ohio State
Current Odds: -220
There is no question Jeremiah Smith is the Heisman favorite. He has 48 receptions, 916 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. No player has performed as well as Smith through the first six weeks of the college football season. If he wins the Heisman, he would become the first Ohio State Buckeye to do so since 2006.
