The Football Power Index is a solid indicator of how well a college football team is doing compared to the rest of the field. The rating system calculates a team’s overall strength, as well as their chances of winning their conference or clinching a College Football Playoff berth.
Penn State has a favorable position on ESPN’s initial index for 2026, currently sitting at No. 16 in the country ahead of Week 1, with an FPI score of 13.7. Although the method for the rankings are different, ESPN has the Nittany Lions one spot higher than their placement on the preseason AP Poll.
Considering they are behind four Big Ten teams — Oregon, Ohio State, Indiana, and Michigan — the index only gives Penn State a 4.6% chance of winning the conference. But luckily,
you don’t have to be the best team in the nation or win your conference to advance to the College Football Playoff, which is why they have a 22.8% chance to make it.
These numbers will change a lot over the course of the season, but this is far from a bad starting point for the Nittany Lions. They don’t get their first real test until Week 4 against Wisconsin, so they could surge up the list if some the teams ahead of them hit some road bumps early on. Let’s see just how high they can get before the big tests in the middle of the season against Michigan and USC.
