Penn State defensive tackle Siale Taupaki might be one of the last people you think of when you list players on the defense, but he’ll be getting all the shine this week. He is presumably in his last year of college football with this being his eighth season on a roster, and he recently revealed why it’s so important for him to play.
When Taupaki was asked why playing for Penn State is such an important opportunity for him, he told reporters, “My parents are still struggling, you know, I’m broke. So, while everybody else is still trying to buy their next pendant or buy their next car, I’m really just trying to fill in all the holes that I have back at home.”

It was an eye-opening statement from the man who’s had one of the strangest journeys ever through college football. He began his collegiate career in 2019, but with the COVID-19 season and countless redshirts, Taupaki barely saw the field in his first few seasons. He finally registered his first statistic in 2024 with the UCLA Bruins, and now he’ll finish out his career with the Nittany Lions.
Some of these players who get extended eligibility and play into their mid-20s are ridiculed by fans, but Taupaki’s situation shows exactly why it’s not always just a shameless cash grab. These are real people who have struggles just like everyone else, and some of them desperately need NIL money to provide for their families.
Taupaki has flown under the radar as an athlete, but he made somewhat of a name for himself with his comments last week. He’ll be a player to look for the rest of the season because his press conference made it impossible not to root for him.
