How costly was the first loss of the season for Penn State? Costly enough to rip away its top 25 standing, at least according to the voters in the Associated Press Top 25 poll.
Following its Week 4 loss at home to Wisconsin, Penn State has been dropped from this week's updated AP Top 25, which was updated Sunday afternoon. Penn State is third among the teams also receiving votes but missing out on the top 25. Wisconsin is the first team out of the top 25 as the top teams also receiving votes. Duke is also just a couple of points ahead of Penn State. Penn State is 20 points behind No. 25 Missouri, which fell six spots after taking its first loss of the season to No. 16 Mississippi State, which debuted in the AP poll this week.
Ohio State is the
Big Ten's highest-ranked team in the AP poll this week at No. 5, followed by No. 6 Indiana. Other Big Ten teams in this week's AP Top 25 are No. 14 Iowa, No. 15 Oregon, No. 18 USC, and No. 23 UCLA.
Penn State also dropped in the US LBM Coaches Poll this week, falling from No. 14 down to No. 22. Penn State fell out of this week's Super 16 poll from the FWAA and National Football Foundation.
Penn State will look to get back in the win column on a short week. The Nittany Lions travel to Northwestern for a Friday night matchup that will feature the grand opening of Northwestern's new and improved Ryan Field on national TV. Northwestern is coming off a close loss on the road against Indiana, suggesting Penn State will have its hands full as they look to rebound.
