Game day in Happy Valley has officially arrived on the first Saturday of September. Matt Campbell makes his head coaching debut with the Nittany Lions
as Penn State hosts Marshall from the Sun Belt Conference for a non-conference matchup in the season opener for both programs. Penn State has been a solid favorite in this matchup since the odds were released and there has been minimal movement on the betting lines throughout the week.Marshall's chances of pulling an upset were diminished a bit this week with news that an NCAA eligibility case that would provide eligibility to defensive star Boogie Trotter was denied. With Trotter no longer eligible for Marshall, Penn State's passing game will have one less threat to be concerned with in the season
opener. That should be good news for new starting quarterback and former Iowa State starter Rocco Becht, who will see some familiar faces to target in Brett Eskildsen and Chase Sowell. But the Nittany Lions and their newly assembled roster and staff will still have to go out and prove themselves in front of their fans for the first time.

There is not too much you can take away from the betting trends from a season ago given the changes taking place with the Nittany Lions this season. Penn State has traditionally been a team that doesn't cover the spread too frequently when favored by a large margin, so doing so in the season opener with an overhauled roster feels like a risky move in Week 1.
For what it is worth, Matt Campbell's Iowa State squad was 5-7 ATS last season, and 3-3 ATS when playing at home. As a favorite, Iowa State was 3-5 ATS, including a mark of 4-3 straight-up when playing as a favorite.
Regardless, the odds are clearly heavy on Penn State for the season opener, and we will see what kind of trends this team develops.

My advice is always to be careful betting Penn State to cover a sizable spread against an opponent like Marshall. The Nittany Lions don't exactly have a great track record of doing so in these types of situations, but it remains to be seen if things will be different now under Matt Campbell.
Penn State's offense appears to be built to systematically take care of the football and put points on the board at a moderate pace rather than dazzle with big plays early and often to run away with things early on. That could make this a bit of a slow burn throughout the game. The play here may be to go take Penn State with the outright victory while Marshall manages to cover the nearly 24-point spread.
