The Matt Campbell era is officially underway in Happy Valley and the expectations couldn’t be higher for Penn State. The school opened the 2026 season at Beaver Stadium against the Marshall Thundering Herd in a game where the first-year Nittany Lions coach made a big statement.
Not only did Campbell’s team blow Marshall out — he also shut them out in a 45-0 trouncing that seemed like a tone-setter for the rest of the season. It was revealed that he is the first Penn State coach to get a shutout in his debut with the team since 1915 when Dick Harlow did it.

Campbell went for it on a fourth down a couple times in a game that was already decided,
and his team never took its foot off the gas. He showed that he isn’t afraid to take some risk and he wants to put his foot on a team’s neck whenever he can.
Even when backup quarterback Alex Manske entered the game in the second half, the Nittany Lions continued to throw the ball and tried to score touchdowns. It was just an excellent performance from the first player on the depth chart all the way down to the last player.
Quarterback Rocco Becht had 271 yards and four touchdowns in less than three quarters, and more than half of those yards went to wide receiver Koby Howard. The sophomore finished his day with 161 yards and a touchdown to put a feather in the cap of an excellent offensive day.
Every unit on the team was clicking Saturday, and their combined efforts culminated in a dominant victory. Let’s hope that this is far from the last century-long drought that Campbell breaks while he coaches Penn State.
